A Little About Me…
Today, I offer a variety of products and services, from memoir writing classes to self-published personal history books. Yet…how do you know I have the necessary skills and experience to get the job done?
Personal Historian Training
- I was a member of the Association of Personal Historians (APH) from January of 2012 until it dissolved in May of 2017. I received years of valuable training through this non-profit trade organization’s online classes and annual conferences.
- I was certified through the University of Wisconsin-Superior in Reminiscence and Life Story Work, December 4, 2015.
Interpersonal skills:
A personal historian must have a certain kind of personality—qualities that cannot be taught in a book or a classroom. This is why the profession is a good fit for me:
- I’m compassionate, sensitive (cry easily with the clients), perceptive, and have a quick sense of humor.
- I’m confidential, honest, and open, so I’m able to put people at ease, bond with them quickly, and gain their trust.
- My natural curiosity causes me–intuitively–to ask good questions that lead to interesting stories and discussions.
Teaching experience:
- I was a self-employed piano teacher for 25 years, with the patience and ability to explain complicated ideas in a simple, fun way.
- I’m currently teaching memoir writing classes at WITC-Superior through their continuing education program.
Writing Experience:
- I am a former freelance writer for The Woman Today, Duluthian, Positively Superior, and Duluth Superior Living magazines.
- Since 2012, I have assisted multiple clients with writing and publishing their stories in various forms.
(See testimonials. Contact information is available upon request.)
- I was a staff writer and board member of the Living Stones News for five years. When writing these “before-and-after” faith journey stories, I learned how to handle very sensitive material in a careful, thoughtful way. In addition to gaining valuable hands-on writing and interviewing experience, I also received training from the publisher and editor.
